Orphan X
A lone-wolf operative with elite training and a moral code. Faster pacing, more gadgets, same satisfying justice.
The Jack Reacher books are best read in publication order, starting with Killing Floor. Lee Child published 29 novels between 1997 and 2024, with Andrew Child joining as co-author from book 25 onward. Most books work as standalones, but publication order lets you watch Reacher evolve and gives you the best sense of Child's pacing. Some readers prefer chronological order (starting with The Enemy, set in 1990), but publication order is the cleanest path for first-time readers.
Most readers should start with Killing Floor. It gives you the cleanest entry point before continuing through the full series order.Listen on Audible

Book #1, and still the best on-ramp. It sets up everything that makes this series work.
If you love Jack Reacher, try these next.
A lone-wolf operative with elite training and a moral code. Faster pacing, more gadgets, same satisfying justice.
A retired Marine sniper pulled back into action. Heavier on firearms detail and rural America.
A CIA assassin on the run. Globe-trotting missions, relentless action, and a protagonist who can disappear in plain sight.
Killing Floor, published in 1997. Reacher steps off a bus in Margrave, Georgia, and gets arrested for a murder he did not commit. It is the only Reacher book written in first person.
No, but publication order is recommended. Most books are standalone cases, but Reacher's backstory and relationships develop gradually. Starting with Killing Floor gives you the fullest experience.
Publication order for most readers. Chronological order puts The Enemy first (set in 1990), but it was written eighth and assumes you already know Reacher. Publication order is how Child intended the series to be read.
Killing Floor. It is the first book published, the basis for Season 1 of the Amazon series, and the strongest introduction to who Reacher is.
One Shot and Never Go Back became Tom Cruise films (2012 and 2016). Killing Floor became Season 1 of Amazon's Reacher series (2022), and Bad Luck and Trouble became Season 2 (2023).
