No. Most books are standalone with a self-contained plot. Publication order gives you the best sense of how the character evolves, but you can jump in anywhere.
One Shot became the 2012 film Jack Reacher, and Never Go Back became the 2016 sequel, both starring Tom Cruise. Amazon's Reacher TV series launched in 2022 with Alan Ritchson, starting with Killing Floor.
Andrew Child (Lee Child's brother, writing under his birth name Andrew Grant) joined as co-author starting with The Sentinel in 2020. The books keep the same structure, though some longtime readers notice a slightly different prose rhythm.
