Why start here
It is the only Reacher book written in first person, giving you the most intimate look at how Reacher thinks and processes danger.
Child wrote this first, so Reacher arrives fully formed and at maximum intensity. You get the complete character from page one.
The plot is a tight small-town conspiracy that introduces everything the series does well: violence, logic puzzles, and a protagonist who cannot leave injustice alone.
It sets up the drifter premise that drives 28 more books. Reacher steps off a bus, walks into trouble, and never looks back.

If you want a tight procedural. This was adapted as the first Tom Cruise film and works well as a standalone.

The Sentinel - 2020
The first book co-written with Andrew Child. Long-time readers notice a different prose rhythm. Not representative of Lee Child's solo voice.
Night School - 2016
A prequel set in 1996 that works best if you already know Reacher well. The plot depends on tension that comes from knowing his future.

No. Andrew Child is Lee Child's younger brother, born Andrew Grant. He started co-writing the Reacher series in 2020 with The Sentinel. Lee Child has gradually stepped back from writing duties.
Lee Child has written a handful of short stories and contributed to anthologies, but his published fiction is essentially all Jack Reacher. The series is his entire body of work.
Either works. Season 1 adapts Killing Floor closely with Alan Ritchson as Reacher. The show captures the character well, and reading afterward fills in the internal monologue the show cannot show.
