Why start here

Percy's voice hooks you from page one. He is funny, self-deprecating, and easy to root for, which makes the mythology go down effortlessly.
Riordan was a middle school teacher, and it shows. He knows exactly how kids think, talk, and get into trouble.
The Greek mythology is woven into the modern world so cleverly that you learn without realizing you are learning.
It is the foundation for Riordan's entire mythology universe - Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Norse series all branch from here.

Other good entry points

Depending on what you're in the mood for.

The Red Pyramid

The Red Pyramid - 2010

If your kid is more into Egyptian mythology. Same Riordan formula, dual narrators, and the humor translates perfectly.

The Lost Hero

The Lost Hero - 2010

If your kid already knows the basics of Greek mythology and wants more complexity. This sequel series adds Roman mythology and new protagonists.

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer - 2015

If your kid is into Norse mythology and Marvel's Thor. Magnus is Percy's Norse counterpart with a more laid-back personality.

What not to start with (yet)

Great books - just not first.

The House of Hades - 2013

Book 4 of the sequel series Heroes of Olympus. It requires knowledge of the first 8 books across two series.

The Sun and the Star - 2023

A companion novel featuring Nico di Angelo that assumes you have read both the original series and Heroes of Olympus.

Frequently asked questions

The sweet spot is ages 8 to 12, but plenty of adults love the series. The writing is accessible without being dumbed down, and the mythology is genuinely well-researched.

Books first if possible. The show is faithful but condenses a lot. Kids who read the books first tend to enjoy both more. That said, the show is a fine entry point if your kid resists reading.

Start with Percy Jackson (5 books), then Heroes of Olympus (5 books). After that, The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, and Trials of Apollo can be read in any order.
