Will Trent books in order

by Karin Slaughter - 12 books - 2006-2024 - Updated June 2026

Will Trent is a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who grew up in the Atlanta foster care system. He is tall, quiet, and dogged, hiding a severe case of dyslexia behind sharp instincts and relentless work ethic. Slaughter writes some of the most unflinching crime fiction in the genre, and Will's personal history gives every case emotional weight that goes beyond the procedural.

Triptych

Book #1, and still the best on-ramp. It sets up everything that makes this series work.

Along Came a Spider

Alex Cross

James Patterson - 31 books

Another detective series anchored in a major city with a protagonist who brings personal stakes to every case. Patterson is faster and lighter where Slaughter is darker and more detailed.

Connelly
The Black Echo

Harry Bosch

Michael Connelly - 24 books

A detective driven by a deep sense of justice and a troubled past. Both Bosch and Trent are shaped by their childhoods, and both authors write procedure with real precision.

Still Life

Inspector Gamache

Louise Penny - 19 books

A completely different tone (cozy Quebec village vs. brutal Atlanta crime scenes), but the same character-driven approach. If you want a palate cleanser between Slaughter's intensity, Penny delivers.

Frequently asked questions

Strongly recommended. Will's relationships with Sara Linton, Faith Mitchell, and Amanda Wagner develop across the series, and key backstory about his childhood is revealed gradually. The cases are standalone, but the emotional arc is not.

The ABC series captures Will's character and the Atlanta setting, but changes significant details. In the show, Will is more outgoing and his dyslexia is less central. The cases draw loosely from the books. The show works as its own thing.

Sara Linton, who is the main character of Slaughter's Grant County series, becomes a major character in the Will Trent books starting with Undone. You do not need to read Grant County first, but it gives Sara's backstory more depth.
