Dennis Lehane
Dark, character-driven crime fiction set in Boston. Similar grit and literary quality.
Michael Connelly spent years as a crime reporter in Los Angeles before turning to fiction. That background shows. His Harry Bosch novels are some of the most authentic crime fiction ever written, rooted in real LAPD procedure and LA geography. The Lincoln Lawyer series added a second pillar, and both have become hit TV shows. Connelly is meticulous about getting the details right, and his plots click together like clockwork.
New to Connelly? Start with The Black Echo (1992) - a tight, self-contained read that is the definitive Connelly experience.
Notable novels - newest readers can dip in anywhere; completists read top to bottom.

Connelly's standalones are most of the work, but these series reward reading in order.
LAPD detective Hieronymus 'Harry' Bosch works homicides across Los Angeles. Methodical, stubborn, and deeply driven.
Defense attorney Mickey Haller works cases from the back of his Lincoln. Half-brother to Harry Bosch.
LAPD detective Renee Ballard works the late shift and refuses to let cases go cold.
The most complete on-ramp to Connelly: a contained story that shows exactly why this author matters.
Authors and series with the same grip.
Dark, character-driven crime fiction set in Boston. Similar grit and literary quality.
Sprawling crime sagas with deep research and LA settings. The Power of the Dog trilogy is essential.
See every book matched to its screen version, with where to watch.
Strongly recommended. Bosch's personal life and career evolve across the series, and later books reference earlier cases. Start with The Black Echo.
Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch are half-brothers. They first appear together in The Brass Verdict. The series overlap increasingly in the later books, and Renee Ballard ties them together further.
The Poet, Blood Work, Void Moon, and The Scarecrow are the main standalones. The Poet is the best of them and a great place to start if you want to try Connelly before committing to a series.
